About

Hi – my name is Lee and “I am an artist“; a statement I’ve just recently become comfortable with.

I use photography and mixed media as a way to sort out and organize thoughts and ideas.  I am especially drawn to the abstract.

I can spend hours methodically photographing one subject or can be found shooting in what looks like a frenzied state; hurried and haphazardly – and then (months or years later) be pleasantly surprised by an image I did not know I’d taken.  My camera of choice these days is one I’ve had converted to infrared. And, more recently; my iPhone.

In addition to my photography, I’ve also begun experimenting with encaustic; the process of painting with pigmented, molten wax – an art form that’s been around since around the 4th century – and am totally smitten with the textural and luminous qualities that working with wax allows.  I am now actively searching for ways to incorporate encaustic with my other art.

About the name of this blog…A friend once asked me, “Are you blue?” and I replied, “I am light blue” because I was a bit melancholy at the time.  But during this ‘blue’ period I was also contemplative and very creative.  It is my intention, in creating this blog, to ‘re-visit’ that time of creativity and share images, thoughts and ideas by ‘putting them out there’ for all to see and as a way to hold myself accountable (and you too) to the creative process.

I selected the quote, “Let me ask you something, what is not art?…because art is all around us if we simply take the time to see it.  But not everyone can see it as easily and I hope this blog is helpful in that way as well.

Art is an adventure and I love adventures!

Here I am at the top of Longs Peak, Colorado (14,259′), my first fourteener!! August 22, 2007; 12:40pm.

  2. Love your quote in your intro line – Let me ask you something what is not art? – hope you don’t mind – I have a category poems and quotes on my blog – I plan to reblog that quote..

    • When I first found the quote I thought it would be perfect for an image I’d taken and I posted the image along with the quote on Aug 26. Check it out – as soon as I posted that I knew I needed to add it to my blog’s name because it ‘says it all’ – that’s what I’m trying to do here with my blog.
      I really appreciate your comment!
And feel free to reblog! 🙂
      Thanks!

  10. I love the way your images on Instagram seem backlit. I wonder what size they are, what they are painted upon, and whether the wax technique (encaustic) is what gives this luminescence.

    • Thank you very much! Are you referring to a certain image/encaustic? Most of the posts on Instagram (especially the recent) are altered photographs that I create on the iPad.
