Free association is a technique used in psychoanalysis and also in psychodynamic theory (so I hear) which was originally devised by Sigmund Freud out of the hypnotic method of his mentor and coworker, Josef Breuer. (Just a little fyi).
‘The importance of free association is that the patients spoke for themselves, rather than repeating the ideas of the analyst; they work through their own material, rather than parroting another’s suggestions.
I played around in the studio last night doing what I call, ‘free painting’…which is kinda the same thing I think…not sure what it all means exactly but I stayed engaged for hours! I’m really intrigued with some of the mixed media and abstract art I’ve been seeing on Pinterest lately…I’m obsessed, actually!!
I love your work, i think i do something similar with my writing, albeit i wasn’t aware of Freud’s concept 🙂
Hi and thank you for taking the time to stop by! I really appreciate the complement and think you’re definitely right about ‘free writing’ being similar. Julia Cameron (The Artists Way) talks about ‘morning pages’ …I’m sure its simply another way to ‘unlock’ what we have stored up inside. – – Enjoying reading your blog as well! Thanks again!
